ABOUT

Our School Radio Program - BUZZ KHS 26.6

Today’s student is a complex, energetic and tech savvy individual. Students want to be challenged and inspired in their learning. Hence educators are planning learning experiences for students that provide opportunities to communicate collaborate and use technology creatively.

The Idea Trigger:  Our school uses the Public Address System (PAS) for the morning prayers or to make important announcements during school time. While addressing the students of Grade 8, 9 and 10 in the morning assembly I floated the idea of using the PAS as a tool to launch our very own school radio program. The response of the young audience, believe me, was awfully indifferent and confusing. Later in the day, two students from grade 10 came to my office to share their perspective about this idea. Surprisingly, they had perceived the idea of a school radio program, to be broadcast as an after school activity, which the students would listen to once they reach home.

The Process without wasting precious time I appointed teacher coordinators who first explained the program to the students and then formed the school radio program team of students. What followed were amazingly interesting meetings to decide the name for the program, signature tune, content and the final look of the program. Gradually the new idea gradually took wings amidst brainstorming of ideas, heated discussions, silly arguments, eloquent interaction. Finally a team with a distinct portfolio for each member such as radio jockeys, content managers, technicians, musicians and students in charge of promotions came into existence. We have also contacted RJ Sangram from Red FM to guide our radio program team.

The Program   BUZZ KHS 26.6 the name for the radio program was accepted unanimously by the team but the story behind the frequency number is rather interesting. KHS Ganeshnagar completes 26 years in 2015 and evidently the school records state that KHS started functioning in the month of June which is the 6 month of the year, hence 26.6 and inadvertently this program was launched on 26/6 of 2015.  This 15 minute radio program broadcast twice a month would be both informative and entertaining. It boasts of its own signature tune and will be the sole responsibility of students of Std. X. Later in the second term, students of Std. IX will take over the reins of the program from their seniors.

The radio program includes interesting sections like Ek Awaaj Ek Saaj (Live singing and music) World around Us (News) Aao Baat Karein (Interviews) Review Gupshup (Reviews of movies, books, restaurants etc.).  The plan regarding further developing the content of the program is still work in progress.

The Learning the school corridors reverberated with congratulatory messages after the first broadcast of the program. Cheering and clapping could be heard from the classrooms confirming the success of the program. In order to sustain the interest of the audience in future, my students understand that they will have to communicate effectively, cooperate and collaborate. Moreover this experience facilitates team work based learning, encourages creative thinking and finally engages them in problem solving skills among the students.
